Volkswagen California AdBlue Warning Light: Causes and Getting Help

What is your California’s warning telling you?

Read the wording as well as looking at the symbol. Volkswagen distinguishes between AdBlue level warnings and SCR system faults. SCR is the emissions system that uses AdBlue, so a fault warning should not automatically be treated as a request for more fluid.

Take a clear photograph while safely parked. Include the whole message and any remaining distance. Tell us whether the California still starts, whether you have already topped up and whether any other warning lights are showing.

Low fluid, system fault or warning after refilling?

A straightforward refill warning means you should follow the vehicle handbook’s topping-up instructions. Volkswagen explains that an empty AdBlue tank can prevent restarting. AdBlue belongs in its separate tank, not the diesel tank.

A system-fault message needs a different approach. Volkswagen’s guidance identifies a disrupted SCR system or non-standard AdBlue as possible reasons. The dashboard message alone does not identify exactly what has failed, so avoid assuming that another refill is the answer.

If you have already refilled, tell us approximately how much you added and whether the wording changed afterwards. Keep any previous diagnostic findings handy too. We do not replace, fit, repair or clean parts, so it is important to understand the limits of our software service before booking.

Which California models use AdBlue?

Volkswagen’s UK California 6.1 brochure lists AdBlue capacity for its 2.0 TDI and 2.0 BiTDI diesel engines. That supports AdBlue use on those listed versions, not a blanket claim about every diesel California built.

We confirm your vehicle’s specification and service suitability from the registration before quoting. The California name or engine size on its own is not enough to promise that we can carry out the work.
