AdBlue Guide

What is AdBlue and how does it work

AdBlue Delete and Removal describe different approaches to AdBlue-related problems, but understanding the system comes first. AdBlue is a fluid used by SCR-equipped diesel vehicles to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. This guide explains how it works, what common warnings mean and why the correct diagnosis depends on the vehicle. Send your registration if you are unsure whether yours uses AdBlue.

01Understanding the service

What is AdBlue and how does it work?

AdBlue is a solution of 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% demineralised water, also known as Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). It is stored in a separate tank and dosed into the exhaust upstream of the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst. Exhaust heat enables the urea to produce ammonia, which reacts with nitrogen oxides over the catalyst to form mainly nitrogen and water. AdBlue must never be poured into the diesel fuel tank.

  • Use fluid meeting ISO 22241 and follow the vehicle handbook.
  • AdBlue is injected into the exhaust, not mixed with fuel.
  • SCR operation is monitored using sensors and control software whose layout varies by vehicle.
  • AdBlue freezes at approximately −11°C; vehicle systems are designed to thaw it, although heater faults can prevent normal operation.

Recognising common AdBlue fault symptoms

Warnings may concern low fluid level, dosing pressure, fluid quality or SCR performance. Some vehicles display a distance or restart countdown, but the response varies by model and fault. P20E8 means reductant pressure too low; possible causes include pump or supply problems, leaks and pressure-sensing faults. P2002 means diesel particulate filter efficiency below threshold, bank 1, and does not by itself identify an AdBlue problem. A full tank does not rule out an SCR fault.

  • Record the exact warning and remaining countdown.
  • If the warning is for low fluid, follow the handbook's refill quantity and recognition procedure.
  • Do not assume a NOx-related code proves that the NOx sensor itself has failed.
  • A no-restart warning generally concerns a subsequent engine start, rather than the engine switching off when the countdown reaches zero.

Why vehicle-specific diagnosis matters

UK Peugeot and Citroën BlueHDi applications commonly use SCR, including 1.6 and 2.0 versions, but an HDi badge alone does not establish AdBlue fitment. Some PSA applications have documented tank venting or pump-module issues, but P20E8 does not prove either cause. Mercedes-Benz and Audi SCR faults can involve NOx sensors, dosing equipment, wiring or other components; the badge alone does not identify the failed part. Send your registration to help check the likely specification, with scan data or a VIN used where needed.

  • Pumps and some sensors may be integrated into the tank assembly.
  • The dosing injector is fitted to the exhaust, not inside the AdBlue tank.
  • Pressure tests, dosing checks and live sensor readings help distinguish possible causes.

AdBlue Delete and Removal: the differences

Delete and Removal usually refer to disabling system functions through software; they do not restore SCR performance. Repair aims to identify the cause and restore correct operation. Fix is a broad description and should be backed by a clear diagnosis and explanation of the proposed work. No software change should be described as eliminating every possible future warning, countdown or starting fault.

  • AdBlue Delete: software deactivation of specified AdBlue or SCR functions.
  • AdBlue Removal: often another name for deactivation, not necessarily physical removal.
  • AdBlue Repair: restoration of the system after fault diagnosis.
  • AdBlue Fix: a general term that needs a defined scope.

What to send before a mobile assessment

Send your registration, postcode, warning photos and any fault-code report so vehicle fitment and mobile availability can be checked. Include whether the engine currently starts, when the warning appeared and whether AdBlue was recently added. This information helps plan testing but does not replace an inspection.

  • Include full diagnostic codes and their descriptions where available.
  • Give the exact countdown rather than an approximate warning description.
  • Mention recent repairs, fluid contamination concerns or visible deposits around the dosing equipment.

Customer questions

Questions customers ask us

Still unsure? Send us your registration and a photo of the warning on WhatsApp.

Ask on WhatsApp
What is AdBlue Delete?

AdBlue Delete generally means software changes intended to disable AdBlue dosing and related SCR monitoring. The scope depends on the vehicle and software; it is not a repair of failed components and does not establish that unrelated warnings or starting faults will disappear. Disabling dosing prevents the SCR system from reducing NOx as designed.

What is AdBlue Removal?

AdBlue Removal is often used to mean software deactivation rather than physical removal of the tank or exhaust components. Ask what work is proposed for your particular vehicle and send your registration so its likely system specification can be checked.

What is AdBlue Repair?

AdBlue Repair restores the system's intended operation after diagnosis. Depending on the fault, this may involve wiring repairs, a pump, dosing injector or NOx sensor, or an applicable manufacturer software update. Delete instead disables functions and leaves any underlying hardware defect unrepaired.

What is an AdBlue Fix?

AdBlue Fix is a general phrase, not a specific technical procedure. A suitable fix depends on whether the warning concerns fluid level, fluid quality, pressure, dosing, sensor readings or another fault. Clearing codes or resetting a countdown without addressing the cause may provide only temporary relief.

What vehicle and postcode information do you need for a quote?

Send your registration, current postcode, exact warning message and any diagnostic codes. Your registration helps identify the likely engine and SCR fitment, and your postcode lets us check mobile availability. A VIN, ECU identification scan or physical inspection may still be needed to confirm fitted components and software.

Can I send my warning light photo on WhatsApp?

You can send a clear warning-light photo via WhatsApp, together with your registration and the displayed countdown, if present. This helps with initial assessment, but a photo cannot confirm which component has failed; diagnostic testing may still be required.

Do you offer 24/7 emergency callouts?

Yes. Our standard hours are Monday to Sunday, 8 AM to 8 PM. Emergency callouts are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, subject to location and availability. An additional emergency callout charge applies and is confirmed before dispatch.
