AdBlue heater problems in winter
AdBlue Delete and Removal enquiries often follow winter warning messages, but a heater fault needs diagnosis before choosing any work. AdBlue freezes at approximately -11°C, and vehicles equipped with SCR are designed to manage this using heating and thawing strategies. A warning in cold weather does not automatically mean the tank needs replacing. Send your registration and postcode to check the vehicle's system and mobile availability.

01Understanding the service
Why AdBlue Heater Problems Appear in Winter
AdBlue contains approximately 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% demineralised water by mass. Tank and line heaters, where fitted, thaw frozen fluid so dosing can resume. Correctly stored AdBlue can be used after it thaws. Cold conditions may expose an existing heater, wiring, power-supply or temperature-sensor fault. The resulting warning and any restart restriction depend on the vehicle and fault; a heater code does not always cause limp mode or a countdown.
- An AdBlue or emissions-system warning may appear.
- The engine management light may illuminate.
- Some vehicles may display a restart countdown; record the exact wording.
- White deposits may indicate dried fluid from a spill or leak, rather than a failed heater.
Diagnostic Checks for Winter Failures
Diagnosis should distinguish normal freezing from a failure to heat when commanded. Read the complete fault report and check manufacturer-specific test information before replacing parts. Useful checks include battery condition, fuses, wiring, connectors, temperature plausibility and commanded heater operation. Resistance and current measurements must be assessed against the correct specifications for that system.
- P202A: reductant tank heater control circuit/open.
- P20BD: reductant heater B control circuit/open; identify the relevant heater using vehicle-specific information.
- P205C: reductant tank temperature sensor circuit low; this does not by itself establish a failed heater.
- Check for connector corrosion, fluid ingress and damaged wiring.
- Confirm whether the vehicle uses tank, supply-line or other separately controlled heaters.
AdBlue Delete and Removal Options
Establish the fault before comparing options. Software disabling is not a hardware repair and cannot be assumed to resolve every SCR warning or an existing no-start condition. A repair may be limited to a connector or wiring fault, while other systems may require a heater module or larger tank assembly. Whether components are separately serviceable depends on the exact vehicle and available parts. Send your registration and diagnostic report to discuss the likely next steps rather than assuming a complete tank replacement is necessary.
Vehicle-Specific Heater Troubleshooting
SCR-equipped Peugeot Partner and Citroën Berlingo BlueHDi variants, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and E-Class diesels, Audi A4 and Q5 diesels, and Ford Transit EcoBlue variants can have different heater arrangements. Not every diesel version of these models has AdBlue, and model name or registration year alone may not establish fitment. Some systems integrate heater components into a tank or delivery module; others allow more targeted replacement. Send your registration, and a VIN if requested, so the configuration can be checked before recommending parts.
Mobile Support for SCR Faults
Suitable diagnostic equipment must communicate with the relevant engine and SCR control functions; some vehicles use a separate dosing controller. Provide your postcode, registration, warning photos and any stored codes to check mobile availability and the likely diagnostic requirements. If the vehicle already will not start, tell us before booking. On-site resolution depends on the fault, access, parts and any required programming or reset procedures.

Check Your AdBlue Fault Code
Enter a diagnostic code to explore its meaning and the information to send with your enquiry.
8 common codes
- P20E8
Fault name
Reductant pressure too low
What it means
The system has reported insufficient reductant pressure. Diagnostic checks help establish the cause, rather than assuming a failed pump.
VIEW FAULT DETAILS - P20EE
Fault name
SCR NOx catalyst efficiency below threshold
What it means
SCR NOx reduction efficiency has been reported below its expected threshold. The full scan and sensor readings help identify possible causes.
VIEW FAULT DETAILS - P204F
Fault name
Reductant system performance, bank 1
What it means
The code concerns SCR operation or monitoring. Read it alongside the full scan and vehicle-specific information.
VIEW FAULT DETAILS - P2200
Fault name
NOx sensor circuit, bank 1
What it means
The code concerns a NOx sensor circuit or signal. It does not alone confirm which part needs attention.
VIEW FAULT DETAILS - P229F
Fault name
NOx sensor circuit range/performance, bank 1 sensor 2
What it means
The code concerns a NOx sensor circuit or signal. It does not alone confirm which part needs attention.
VIEW FAULT DETAILS - P2047
Fault name
Reductant injection valve circuit/open, bank 1 unit 1
What it means
The code concerns a dosing or aftertreatment injector. Check the fitted system and full scan before assuming a cause.
VIEW FAULT DETAILS - P203F
Fault name
Reductant level too low
What it means
The system reports that the reductant level is too low. Check the actual fluid level and whether the reported level is accurate.
VIEW FAULT DETAILS - P207F
Fault name
Reductant quality performance
What it means
The system has reported reductant quality performance. The code alone does not identify the cause.

Customer questions
Questions customers ask us
Still unsure? Send us your registration and a photo of the warning on WhatsApp.
Ask on WhatsAppWhat is AdBlue Delete?
AdBlue Delete refers to software changes intended to disable SCR dosing and associated monitoring. It does not repair a failed heater, damaged wiring or a leak. The effects and limitations depend on the vehicle and software; it should not be described as a guarantee against every warning or starting problem.
What is AdBlue Removal?
AdBlue Removal is often used to mean electronic disabling of the SCR system, rather than physical removal of the tank and pipes. Ask what the proposed work includes. Send your registration and fault information so the vehicle's system can be checked.
What is the difference between AdBlue Delete and AdBlue Repair?
AdBlue Repair addresses the cause of a fault and restores system operation. Depending on the diagnosis, this may involve wiring repairs, a heater, a temperature sensor or a tank assembly. Delete changes software behaviour rather than repairing those components. Repair scope and cost depend on the vehicle and confirmed fault.
What is an AdBlue Fix?
An AdBlue Fix is a general term for resolving an AdBlue complaint, not a specific procedure. For winter heater problems, the first step is to establish whether the issue is normal freezing, an electrical fault, a temperature-sensing problem or another SCR fault.
What vehicle and postcode information do you need for a quote?
Send your registration, current postcode, mileage and the exact warning message. Your registration helps identify the likely engine and SCR fitment, while your postcode lets us check mobile coverage. A VIN, diagnostic scan or ECU identification may also be needed before confirming the work and quote.
Can I send my warning light photo on WhatsApp?
Yes. Send a clear dashboard photo and any complete diagnostic report, including fault codes and descriptions. These help guide the initial assessment, but a photo alone cannot confirm a heater failure. Tell us whether the engine starts and whether a restart countdown is displayed.
Do you offer 24/7 emergency callouts?
Yes. Our standard hours are Monday to Sunday, 8 AM to 8 PM. Emergency callouts are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, subject to location and availability. An additional emergency callout charge applies and is confirmed before dispatch.
